Eagles must be light enough to take off and fly from the ground and strong enough to carry their prey once caught. A bald eagle has more than 7,000 feathers, but when all of them are put together, their total weight is about 500 grams. Additionally, their bones are hollow to reduce body weight. These bones contain nothing but air in many places. The entire skeleton of a bald eagle weighs just over 272 grams.
