
The capybara is a species of rodent. It is the largest living rodent. It is herbivorous and semi-aquatic. In appearance, it has a heavy, barrel-like body, short head, small ears, and a short tail. The upper part is reddish-brown, and the lower part is yellowish-brown. Hydrochoerus hydrochaeris is the largest living rodent. Adults reach about 106-134 cm in length and weigh between 35-79 kg. Females are slightly heavier than males. A wild female weighing 91 kg in Brazil and a wild male weighing 73.5 kg in Uruguay are the heaviest recorded specimens of the species. There is also a record of an individual weighing 81 kg in São Paulo in 2001 or 2002. The hind legs are longer than the front legs.
