Armadillo is the common name for armored placental mammals in the order Cingulata, with only the families Dasypodidae and Chlamyphoridae surviving. Armadillo species, nine extinct and 21 living, are distinguished by the bands in their armor. They are endemic to America. Armadillos have a type of armor that protects their body, resembling pill bugs.
