
They inhabit rivers, lakes, canals, and swamps in tropical and subtropical regions of Africa and Madagascar. They feed on fish, turtles, waterfowl, and mammals. Females lay 40 eggs at a time. The incubation period is 11–14 weeks. They grow to 2.5–4 meters in length. Their jaws and tails are very strong. There are swimming webs between their hind toes.
