Parrots and herons produce a kind of "dust" to clean their wings. This dust comes from the worn tips of their feathers. In some species, such as pigeons and parrots, the dust is distributed among the bird's feathers. In others, especially herons, this dust is collected in small clusters. The exact function of this dust is not yet fully understood, but it is thought to help waterproof the wings. White herons, pelicans, and other water birds oil themselves with oil secreted from a gland located in the skin under their tails. Washing, dusting, and oiling prepare the feathers for flight again.
