Having poisonous seeds is an effective defense method for plants, but some birds know very well how to bypass this defense. Macaws (a type of parrot native to tropical America) are experts at taking poisonous seeds. With their giant hook-like beaks, they can break even very hard shells. After eating the poisonous seeds, they immediately fly to the rocks and chew and swallow the clay rock pieces found there. These clay pieces absorb the toxins in the seeds, allowing the birds to digest the nutrient-carrying parts of their food without stomach pain.
