Swans are relatively lightweight compared to other mammals. A bulldog of the same size is "four times" heavier than a swan. There are several reasons why birds are lightweight. Their hollow bones are supported by internal struts. Instead of a tail, they have fluffy feathers, and instead of a jaw covered with teeth, they have beaks. A significant part of their bodies is filled with air, stored in nine air sacs found in many birds. These air sacs not only reduce weight but also play an important role in the bird's respiratory system. During flight, birds expend a lot of energy and therefore need a very high oxygen supply. These air sacs allow the swan to take in much more oxygen than a mammal of the same size.
