The Red Deer (Cervus elaphus) is one of the largest deer species in the world. Red deer live in most parts of Europe, the Caucasus region, and Anatolia west of the Caspian Sea. They are also the only deer species found in Africa, inhabiting the Atlas Mountains between Algeria and Tunisia in northwest Africa. Red deer have also been introduced to other regions such as New Zealand and Argentina. In Turkey, their numbers have decreased due to overhunting, and current populations are being protected. Red deer meat is consumed as food in many parts of the world.
