Their bodies are elongated. Their mouths are extended forward. They are predatory and can attack large vertebrates. They can swallow air (can perform lung respiration). They can reach a maximum length of 40 cm. Although they are freshwater fish, they can also live in the sea for a while. They live in North and Central America and China. The water temperature is 22–24°C. They are carnivorous fish, feeding entirely on meat.
