Swordtail

  • Category: Aquarium
  • Expression:

It is one of the most popular aquarium fish. It is quite active compared to other livebearers. It is named this because of the sword-like length of its tail fin. Females have rounder bodies compared to males. They like medium-sized, heavily planted aquariums. They live in Mexico, Honduras, and Guatemala. Swordtails can crossbreed with other species such as moon, Simpson, and albino swordtails, developing various color varieties through hybridization and selection methods. Since they can jump to quite high distances, the aquarium water should be at least 10 cm below the rim. Their preferred temperature is 20-25°C. If there are no male fish left in the swordtail schools for various reasons, the strongest female takes the place of the male.
