Porcupine is the common name for rodents of the families Hystricidae and Erethizontidae. They are about 60-90 cm in length and weigh 5-16 kg. Their tails are about 20-25 cm long. They are brown, gray, or rarely white. Despite the name similarity, porcupines are not hedgehogs. Hedgehogs belong to the family Erinaceomorphs. The term porcupine in Western languages derives from the Middle French "porc d'épine" (spined pig).
