Mandarin ducks forage by walking on land or swimming in water, typically at dawn or dusk. During the day, they sit on the ground or perch in trees. In the wild, Mandarin ducks live in dense groves, thickets, or small pond plants near shallow lakes. They make their nests in tree cavities near water. Shortly after hatching, their mother flies to the ground, luring the ducklings to leave the nest. In Asia, they migrate to the eastern plains of China and southern Japan in winter. Their primary food sources are plants and seeds, especially beech nuts. Mandarin ducks can form small flocks in winter but rarely mingle with other ducks. Frequently featured in Eastern art, they symbolize fidelity and love. A Chinese proverb says, "Two Mandarin ducks play in the water" to describe a loving couple. Mandarin ducks are also traditional symbols of happiness and fidelity used in Chinese weddings.
